Egypt is a year-round destination — but when you go makes a huge difference. The Nile Valley has one of the most extreme climates on Earth: scorching summers that push 45°C in Luxor and Aswan, and remarkably mild winters where you'll need a jacket at night. Understanding the seasons is the first step to planning a trip you'll love.

October – April: Peak Season (Best Time)

This is when most travelers visit, and for good reason. Temperatures in Aswan and Luxor range from a comfortable 18°C to 28°C — perfect for exploring temples without melting. Cairo is cooler still. The Nile is at its most beautiful, the desert is alive, and the light for photography is extraordinary.

  • October & November — Perfect weather, fewer crowds than Christmas. Our top recommendation for first-time visitors.
  • December & January — Peak tourist season. Book tours and cruises well in advance. Cold evenings in the desert.
  • February & March — Still excellent weather. Abu Simbel Sun Festival on Feb 22 is spectacular.
  • April — Warming up but still very pleasant. Crowds thinning. Great value on accommodation.

TUT Tip: October and November are our personal favourite months — perfect weather, golden light and far fewer crowds than the Christmas peak.

May – September: Summer (Hot but Possible)

Temperatures in Luxor and Aswan regularly exceed 40°C in summer — sometimes 45°C. This is brutal for outdoor sightseeing. However, there are real advantages: prices drop significantly, crowds almost disappear, and experienced travelers who go early morning and late afternoon find it perfectly manageable.

  • May — Transitional month. Still pleasant early in the month, then heating up fast.
  • June – August — Extreme heat. Best for budget travelers who plan around the heat.
  • September — Starts to cool down. Excellent value, very few tourists.

Key Festivals & Events

  • Abu Simbel Sun Festival — Feb 22 & Oct 22. The sun illuminates the inner sanctuary twice a year.
  • Luxor African Arts Festival — March. Music, dance and culture from across Africa.
  • Ramadan — Dates vary. Unique atmosphere, some sites have different hours.

Bottom line: Visit between October and April if possible. If you must go in summer, plan early morning starts and midday rest — and book Abu Simbel at 4am before the heat arrives.
